How We Help

CRIME VICTIMS UNITED CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
19TH ANNUAL CLASSIC CUP

October 13, 2008

Thank you to all who participated in or supported this year's Classic Cup Tournament benefiting victims of crime! This year's event was a huge success.

THANK YOU!

The weather was perfect, food and drink plentiful on the course, but the highlight of the day was at the Awards Dinner that followed the tournament. The room was brought to their feet at the presentation of the Catina RoseMemorial Scholarship. This scholarship is presented to a young person seeking higher education who was a victim or victim survivor of crime.

Dominique Cordero, last years scholarship recipient was on hand to help present the award to this year’s winner. Dominique was a victim of sexual assault at the tender age of 6. Her testimony was key in the conviction of her attacker. Dominique now attends UC Davis and we were very proud to have Dominique as our first Catina Rose Memorial Scholarship recipient.

This year’s recipient, Rachelle Orzulak, suffered the loss of her mother. When Rachelle was 17, her mother was brutally murdered by her estranged husband while she sat in their kitchen. Rachelle and her 19 year old brother were forced to move out of their home into an apartment to fend for themselves. She endured the heart-ache of a trial and the loss of her home and all her possessions. Despite this, she attends Cal State Fullerton, where she has made the Deans List in fall of 2007 and is pursuing a career in marketing.

“I am very honored to have received the Catina Rose Memorial Scholarship,” said Rachelle, “People go through hardships in life and if you can get through them it makes you stronger. I hope to be able to make a difference in someone else’s life like Crime Victims United has made in mine.”

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the PREVENT Scholarship. The PREVENT Scholarship is awarded to a young person who is at risk, but chooses to pull their life together.

This year’s recipient, Brandon Dennis was struggling as a teen. Involved in drinking, joy riding and burglary, his parents demonstrated “tough love” and turned their son in. With the support of his parents, Brandon turned his life around and will be attending school in San Louis Obispo where he plans to major in Veterinary Medicine or Field Research with reptiles.

This is only a sample of how your support of Crime Victims United Charitable Foundation benefits victims of crime. Your support also helps maintain teddy bear rooms at District Attorney’s offices throughout the state, adoptions of “at risk” youth and so much more.

To all who have supported us we THANK YOU for helping us make a difference in the lives of young victims.

If you would like to make a difference for young victims such as these, please mark your calendar and plan on joining us next year for our 20th Annual Classic Cup Tournament on OCTOBER 19, 2009!
